Vascular surgery residents participate in patient care at three different locations: (1) Barnes-Jewish Hospital (north and south campuses), (2) St. Louis Children’s Hospital and (3) the Center for Advanced Medicine where the outpatient vascular surgery clinic is located. Each of these areas is adjoining and physically interconnected by enclosed walkways. All vascular care at the John Cochran Veterans Administration Hospital is provided by the general surgery residents at this hospital with supervision by Drs. Flye, Choi and Curci. Vascular surgery residents do not care for any patients at the Veterans Administration Hospital.

Barnes-Jewish Hospital South Campus. This is the primary location of the clinical training program for the vascular surgery residents. The vast majority (99%) of vascular procedures are performed at this campus.

St. Louis Children’s Hospital. At this affiliated institution, less than 10 vascular procedures per year are performed. These are primarily vascular trauma cases and are covered by the chief resident or vascular surgery resident rotating on the service of the vascular attending involved in the particular case.

Barnes-Jewish Hospital North Campus. In rare circumstances, the vascular surgery resident may assist a faculty member in the operating rooms at the north campus. These cases are primarily unexpected vascular injuries in laparoscopic or endocrine procedures. In additional, when requested, vascular surgery consults on patients at the north campus are provided under the direction of the chief resident or vascular surgery resident rotating on the service of the vascular attending involved in the case.

Additional information on these hospitals is available at: http://www.barnesjewish.org/ (for Barnes-Jewish Hospital) and http://www.stlouischildrens.org/ (for St. Louis Children's Hospital).

Center for Advanced Medicine (CAM): The CAM building was opened in late 2001 and is the site where physicians see all outpatients. This modern facility is organized so that patients can have their vascular laboratory evaluations and see their surgeon and additional consultants in a single location. All vascular surgery patients are seen in the Heart and Vascular Center on the 8th floor of the CAM building. The Vascular Surgery Service uses four examining rooms five days a week. Over the last three academic years (2004-2006), there has been a 25% increase in outpatient vascular visits in our outpatient clinic (see below).
