Patient Care

The Vascular Surgery section at Washington University School of Medicine is dedicated to offering open and endovascular treatment for patients with vascular diseases. Of particular note is the section's involvement since 1996 in Food and Drug Administration (FDA) trials of several stent graft devices (fabric tubes that reinforce a weak spot in a blood vessel) designed to repair abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms through minimally invasive endovascular (within the blood vessels) procedures. The FDA has approved four of these grafts for repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Gregorio A. Sicard, M.D., F.A.C.S., chief of the Section of Vascular Surgery, examines a patient.

Washington University vascular and cardiothoracic surgeons also participate in clinical trials of stent graft devices designed to treat thoracic aneurysms using endovascular techniques.

In addition to treating aneurysms, the Vascular Surgery section offers endovascular treatment for all arterial regions in patients with vascular disease including the treatment of carotid artery disease for stroke prevention and other vascular sectors.

And Washington University vascular surgeons join with a cardiothoracic surgeon, interventional radiologists and the medical director of the Marfan Clinic to offer treatment through the Center for Diseases of the Thoracic Aorta.

Advanced procedures also are offered to treat other diseases listed on the "Services at a Glance" web page.
